The Last Farewell

I wanted to spend forever with you

But it didn’t work out, did it:

When my eyes were opened I realized

You weren’t who I thought you were

Because you fooled me

(With your little white lies)

And when you colored between the lines I didn’t see

The little mistakes on the page,

Did I?

But for what you gave me, I thank you

And I’ll keep what I know was real:

The sunsets, the sunrise, the Hope:

But really, that was all we had.

It was fiction, all along

(I thought I was reading truth…a good book will make one think it’s real)

You crushed me into the sand

Little by little,

Taking away from me

Everything

But I’m a phoenix

I regenerate

My rebirth is strong, fiery and true:

And soon the sun will rise

And I, with it:

My armor is my smile

As the angels gather around and walk with me

Through mountains and meadows

It would be so easy to light the match

But instead, I extinguish the flame

With the flick of my tail

As I start over: The phoenix takes flight once more.
